The Vila de Gracia neighbourhood was the main nucleus of the old independent town of Gracia (1850-1897), and the one that gave it its name.
At first this territory was dependent on Barcelona and was sparsely populated. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, close to the existing, isolated farmhouses, three convents were built (among them, that of the Josepets) and a series of towers promoted by the Barcelona bourgeoisie. During the first half of the 19th century, this small agricultural centre became the most important town on the Barcelona plain, thanks to its progressive industrialisation, taking advantage of the availability of free land. The convenience of integrating it into Barcelona was increasingly raised, in parallel with the progressive development of the Cerdá Plan, which was then in full expansion. Thus, from 1880 onwards, projects of common interest were born, such as the Paseo de Gracia, which linked the town with the big city following the old road. It was joined again to Barcelona in 1897.
Little by little, streets were built that connected the neighbourhood internally and externally, and facilities such as the Libertad (1893) and Abacería Central markets.
Gracia has always had and maintains an active political and social life and a rich network of civic, cultural, recreational, artistic and sporting institutions with great popular roots. There are reference points for Gaudí such as Casa Vicens. Its most identifiable monument is the Clock Tower, which stands in the centre of the Plaza de la Villa, where the old town hall is located, today the district headquarters.
